Eating Like a Local
Mauritius is a destination defined by its fusion cuisine. While our Port Louis food tours are the best way to explore, sometimes you just need a quick guide to what to order when you spot a street stall! Forget expensive resort meals for a day and grab a genuine taste of the island. From spicy bites to comforting drinks, here is your essential checklist of five must-try, iconic Mauritian street foods, with notes on what they are and why you need to try them.
The Essential Mauritian Street Food Checklist
1.DHOLL PURI
Two thin, warm flatbreads made from ground yellow split peas, typically filled with butter bean curry, tomato rougaille (sauce), and chillies. The National Snack. A soft, wholesome, and perfectly spiced vegetarian staple. It’s affordable, filling, and found everywhere—the true taste of Mauritian life.
2.GATO PIMA
Crispy, golden-fried balls of ground yellow split peas, spring onion, and fresh chilli. The Spicy Bite. Served piping hot, these chilli cakes are the island’s favourite savoury snack (gadjacks). They are crunchy on the outside and soft and flavourful inside.
3.BOULETTES
Steamed dumplings (often filled with fish, chicken, or chouchou / chayote squash) served in a clear, flavourful, aromatic broth. The Comfort Food. Often eaten in Chinatown or at a roadside stall, these are served in a bowl with a spoon—perfect for a quick, warming, and deeply satisfying lunch.
4.Alouda
A sweet, milky, pink drink, chilled and mixed with agar-agar jelly, vanilla, and basil seeds (tukmaria, similar to chia seeds). The Sweet Refresher. Known as the Mauritian milkshake. It’s thick, sweet, and incredibly refreshing after a walk on a hot day. The Central Market is famous for it!
5.ROTI / FARATA
A flaky, thin, pan-fried flatbread (similar to Indian paratha) served piping hot, wrapped around a choice of curry and chutney. The Versatile Wrap. Similar to Dholl Puri but with a crispier, flakier bread texture. It’s an easy, handheld meal that perfectly showcases the island’s mild, aromatic curries.
Now that you know what to look for, don’t just wander aimlessly! The best way to safely and
efficiently try all five of these iconic dishes (and many more) is with a local.
